There are several different types of spiders that typically infest homes in Aurora. When we are called in to treat for spiders we typically come across:

House Spiders – House spiders are the most common spiders found in peoples living areas. These pests love hanging around areas that are low in traffic such as high corners, closets, and garages, and produce a large amount of webbing.

Garden Spiders – As their name implies, these spiders lurk in gardens or yards, just outside of homes. Garden spiders feed on other insects and are not found to be aggressive toward humans. However, if they feel threatened they will bite. They are venomous but their venom will not cause much harm to humans or pets.

Wolf Spiders – Wolf spiders are hairy arachnids that get their name for their tendency to remain on the ground and hunt at night. They prefer their solitude, are quick on their feet, and do not have lethal bites though their bites can be very painful.

In more rare cases, we unfortunately come across the two venomous spiders that can be found in Illinois: brown recluse and black widows.

Brown Recluse – The name Brown Recluse came from the spiders’ tendency to be shy and reclusive. Their bites are very painful and originally develop into a blister before eventually splitting into a lesion and, in severe cases, can cause skin necrosis – destruction of the skin tissue. In particularly serious situations, the afflicted area can turn septic and even become fatal.

Black Widow – Unlike other arachnid bites, the bite of a black widow appears as two clear puncture marks. Black widows have very strong fangs and are easily able to stab through human skin to inject venom into their victims. This venom contains a powerful neurotoxin that will begin radiating pain in the location of the wound before spreading to the chest, other limbs, abdomen or even the entire body. In serious cases, a bite from a black widow can be fatal.
