With Gold Coast so close to Lake Michigan, you might begin to wonder if there are any good bugs in world, especially as you swat your thousandth mosquito. Did you know that there are approximately 10 quintillion bugs alive on the earth right now? Amid all those bothersome bugs, can you think of any that are good? At Pointe Pest Control, we have seen our fair share of bad bugs. When Gold Coast residents need pest control for cockroaches, black widows, bed bugs, wasps, and other bugs they turn to us. Don’t worry though; there are quite a few good insects. Here are a few bugs that are out to make the world a better place.
Honey Bees: Honey bees produce golden sweet honey. For thousands of years people have been eating and using honey. Did you know that if stored properly, honey will stay good indefinitely? That’s right, researchers found a canister of honey in an Egyptian tomb that was just as good as the honey you would buy from the store. Honey isn’t the only benefit provided by honey bees, they also pollinate the flowers of most of your produce. Without bees and pollinators, we wouldn’t have vegetables and fruit to eat.
Lady Bugs: Have you ever eaten an orange or grapefruit from California? More than 100 years ago the citrus farms in California were in trouble. The groves were being attacked by an insect that is called a scale. Scales tap into the citrus trees and consume the sap. Scales also form a hard crusty shell that protects them from predators. There were so many scales that the trees were failing. That is when they brought in the lady bug. Lady bugs devour scales. Their hard mandibles chew right through the scales protective shell. Lady bugs also eat other destructive insects like aphids and mites. Next time you start peeling a California orange, you can thank the little lady bug.
Spiders: Arachnophobia is one of the most common fears. They might induce fear with their eight legs and rows of eyes, but spiders are a great creature to have around. Spiders are not insects, they are arachnids and they are super beneficial. Spiders spin webs to catch and eat insects. It has been estimated that a single spider will eat 2,000 insects during its lifetime. That’s a lot of flies, mosquitoes, cockroaches, moths and other pesky bugs that make your life miserable. Garden spiders reduce populations of harmful insects that destroy crops. As nasty as spiders look, they are beneficial.
