The Mystery of the Tiny Holes

Just the other week, one of our newest customers called in. She said she was happy with our services so far, but that she was worried that she may have gotten a sudden infestation of bugs. “I’m thinking there might be some moths that got in somehow,” she said. “Okay,” I responded. “Have you seen them anywhere?” “No. But I’m starting to find these tiny holes in my shirts.” This is a common sign of moth infestations, so her concern was very valid. I began collecting information from her to send to the technicians and pulled up the schedule to pick a date for an inspection and treatment. But, as I was taking these notes, the customer suddenly asked a peculiar question. “Is there a reason why they only make tiny holes in the exact same spot, and only in my shirts?” she asked. I paused. That wasn’t normal at all. In fact, bugs that target clothing rarely target the same spot on different garments. “They seem to be going for the belly button area,” she continued. That’s when it clicked for me. “Ma’am,” I asked, “are the holes kind of around the height of your counters?” “Yes, in that area,” she said. “Why?” “Bugs don’t really target clothes like that. So, I’m wondering if this might actually be a belt or the metal button of your pants that’s rubbing against your counters while you stand.” She was silent for a second, then laughter suddenly burst through the phone. “You know what?! YES! I think that’s actually what it may be!” she said. I broke out into laughter as well. The relief in her voice was obvious. She had been stressed for days thinking that she had a weird bug infestation, but now the weight of the worry was lifted from her. She thanked me for helping her solve the “mystery of the tiny holes” and we ended our call laughing.
