5 Common Springtime Pests

Springtime = “Pest-time”

The frigid winter is finally melting away and spring has finally come! Unfortunately, this beautiful, warmer time of year also comes with a substantial increase in pest activity. In Illinois there are a variety of different pests we start seeing reemerge at this time. The following at the top 5 most common springtime pests:

1. Wasps/Bees

Spring is the time of year when these stinging pests reemerge to form their colonies. Once a nest has been built the queen will begin repopulating the colony. Depending on the type of wasp or bee, these colonies can soon grow to populations of several hundred to several thousand. If you start seeing what appears to be wasps/bee making a nest in or around your home, give us a call right away! It is important to stop these territorial pests before they try to make your home their home.

2. House Flies

Yup… it’s the season of these incredibly annoying pests. While flies may not sting and, thankfully, don’t pose a threat to our homes, we still certainly don’t want them around. Unfortunately, house fly infestations are not something exterminators can typically treat. This is due to the fact that fly infestations are caused by a stimulant, and often the stimulant has to do with sanitation. That’s why spring cleaning is the key to preventing these little pests. Doing a once over of your home to clear out clutter, polish surfaces, and ensure that all garbage is removed from your home can do wonders for fly prevention.

3. Ants

One ant – two ants – red ants – black ants. Springtime is the prime time for all different kinds of ants emerging from their winter hibernation. After being tucked away for so many months, these little insects are on a mission to find sources of food. Unfortunately, this means homes are a prime target for foraging ants. Making sure all your food is properly sealed, crumbs are cleared away and dirty dishes aren’t left out all will greatly help reduce your chances of ants in your home.

4. Spiders

When there’s insects entering your home, spiders are normally right on their heels. Aside from just following insects inside, these carnivorous arachnids are also drawn to homes due to the shelter they provide and their access to water sources. They tend to occupy places such as basements, crawl spaces, garages, attics, and anywhere that is not very commonly trafficked. While they can help curb the populations of other springtime pests, spiders can still be very problematic and, especially in the case of some venomous species, even dangerous.

5. Mosquitos

While true mosquito season is summer, employing preventative measures in springtime is key to avoiding a giant infestation of these nasty bloodsuckers next season. Here are some steps you can take to help reduce your chances of mosquitos breeding in you yard:

  • Keep gutters free of debris and trash so stagnant water does not accumulate
  • Make sure bird baths, pet water bowls, and other outside water is changed regularly
  • Do not overflow flowerpots with water
  • Trim back excessive foliage to avoid densely shaded areas
  • Ensure that drains are not blocked
